Queen Street, May 271 b 1844NATIVE INSTRUCTION. At a PUBLIC MEETING held in the Wes= Jeyan Cbapel at Auckland, on Tuesday Evening, May 14th, 1844, Rev. Mr. Lawry in the Chair, the following Resolutions were unanimously passed :—. Ist. Resolved : That it appears to this Meeting very desireable to instruct a selected number of the Natives of New Zealand in our language, with a view to their having access to the stores of English Literatare, and also to their becoming more efficient teachers of their countrymen, both in matters of religion, and civilization. Moved by Dr. Martin. Seconded by Dr. Johnson, Supported by the Rev. John Whiteley. 2nd. Resolved ; That as the vicinity of Auckland is deemed the most eligible locality for the commencement of such an Institution, an early application shall be made to the Colonial Government for a suitable piece of land. And also that application be made for the appropriation of a fair and eqtiilahle proportion of the funds arising from the Native reserves. Moved by the Rev. James Wallis. Seconded by W, E. Cormack, Esq. Supported by Thomas Cleghorn Esq. i 3rd. Resolved : That as funds will be required to commence and carry on such an Institution, Mr Kennedy be respectfully requested to act as Trea* surer, and the Rev. Thomas Buddie as Secretary* Moved by Mr. W. S. Grabame. Seconded by Mr. S. Robinson. 4th. Resolved : That a provisional committee be appointed for the purpose of raising funds, and controuling the same; that Dr. Martin, Messrs. Brown, Cleghorn, Cormack ,|VV, S. and G. Grahame and Vaile, be members of tile Committee, together with the Wesleyan Missionaries, the Treaanrer and Secretary. (Ex Ufficio.) Moved by the Rev. Thomas Buddie, Seconded by Mr. George Grahame. Supported by Mr. Barrow, sth. Resolved ; That for the purpose of securing an early commencement of the Native Establishment a Subscription be forthwith beguu. Moved by Mr. H. Lawry.
