To the Ediloi of the Auckland Chronicle. Mr, —In the last number of your journal yen were good enough to call the attention of His Excellency the Governor to the Public Declaration be made, at his fiist Levee, that “The Government Printing was to be given to the Newspaper Offices, and the Government Printing Office to be done away with.’ 1 1 have no doubt that interested parties have told the Governor some fine stories respecting" Ihe great saving to the Government by retaining the Printing Establishment. Now, Sir, with your permission I will point out a few strong reasons that I think may induce His Excellency to keep his promise. Ist. 'lhe Printing materials now in possession of the Government would br.ng a handsome sum if taken to Sydney, and there sold by Public Auction. 2nd, The premises now in use, as the Government Printing Office, might suit for the Colonial Sccreiaty’s Offices, or some other department, and save the Colony ihe needless expense that is now entailed on it by renting premises they now hold for offices at a heavy rent. 3rd; If tbe Governor is determined to keep up t.lie Printiug Office, why not let it be known as publicly as he stated it was to be done away with.; which would enable many, who are like myself, with very scanty means of support, to try andmake arrangements-to quit New Zealand, and 4th. Id .the event of the Government Office being continued would it not be fair and just that tenders should be published in the Government Gazette calling upon Journeymen Piinters and Bookbinders to send in tenders, on a certain day, for composing the Gazette at sg much per page, and the presswork at a certain price per 100. The Government forms might be printed in the same way, and as for what little bookbinding there is ta do, it might be done (in a workmanlike manner) by either of tbe Binders in Auckland at cne bal£ the price it must cost the Got eminent at the preaeo'^ I remain, Mr. Editor, your’s mast respectfully, JOHN DARBY.
