A Thief in a Fricut. —One day last week, a sneaking female thief managed to slip into a poor woman’s honse in the north quarter of the town du* ring her abaenoe. Supposing the coast to be all clear, she hastily rolled up the blankets of the bed, and was in the act of decamping with them, when the mother of the mistresa of the house, who had seen the whole operation from a sick bed, gave a loud scream. This might have been disregarded by the depredator, but when she also heard a bitter cry proceeding from the bundle which she carried, she threw it down iu the utmost horror and made her escape. 'lhe truth is, she had rolled up tha poor woman’s infant in her harry, but the wailing of its grandmother bad awakeued it ; and thus its timorous outory was probably the means of saving its own life, as it was dearly the saving of the blankets.

The town was generally illuminated as on the ig-lit before, and the streets were crowded wilh >eople.
