Monday, January 8. A man named Devine, was brought up on a charge of being drunk. The charge was sworn to by two witnesses, when he was sentenced to pay a fine of 2()s and costs, or (Orty eight hours imprisonment and hard iabcur. This being his fifth offenc, within thiee months, he was sentenced to 7 days addiiional Sergeant Steel then charged the pnw-er wiih assaulting him whilst bewasescorling him to the lockup. The ihuge of assault being proved, he received in a Irlition to his former sentence, fourteen day's imprisonment and hard labour. Four Parkhurst hoys were then placed at the bar, chatged by the overseer, Mr. Barry, w:th refusing to do certain work, and absconding. The bo»s, in defence said they had no shoes, and cnuld not wotk on the roads. Captain Rough stated to the bench that the boys now before th* comt, had been treated in the kindest manner, but he was sorry to say they w re not grateful for the kindness they had received, as it was necessary oa a former occasion to brirg them to court (or their misconduct; but, continntd Captain Rough, if the bovs conduct themselves in a becoming man* Der, ihey may depend they will have shoes and every other indulgence that can possibly be given.
