CORPORATION FOR AUCKLAND.
(To the Editor of the Auckland Chronicle .) Sir,—Who is the worthy “New Settler” mendotted in your last, who talks of a Corporation for Auckland ? Perhaps he wishes to be Mayor Member of Council, or Town Crier, or at all events some Office where his Voice can be heard. He talks very patriotically of not being; “scared by the objections of Expense and Taxation,” perhaps he would like to subscribe to some Charitable Institutions, road making, etc. No doubt lie can be accommodated. Perhaps he would also inform the Public where he would obtain his 2,000 Inhabitants, I have not the least doubt that our fellow townsmen at work on the roads would enter with great zest into any arrangement where they would be taxed out of their twelve shillings per week. If our frieods to the southward are fond of all the nonsense and humbug of a Corporation, we Aucklandites are not at all ambitious for the honor in "»r preset!' infantine state. Wishing the New Settler a pleasant Christinas, and reformation to him—l am, Sir, etc.
AN OLD SETTLER. Auckland, December 19, 1842.
