Left Russell's Station at Te Waipukurau at half past nine yesterday. Called at Paraima, lunched there on bread and onions. Got to Porangahau at half past three. Detained by the Porangahau natives, to discuss the sale of their land. Heavy showers. Porangahau is a tolerably good river for small craft of 12 or 14 tons. It abounds with fish. The natives are industrious, and raise a good supply of wheat, maize, potatoes, pigs, etc., There are some good rich flats of land, but the country is generally of a hilly description, very dry, and well adapted for sheep, when the fern is burnt off. The Porangahau natives demand £3000 for their land. I offered them £1400 for the land from Paremahu, to a line South of Porangahau, running a good distance inland. Left Porangahau, and got to Akitio on Wednesday.
