Taranaki. New Plymouth. 8th. March 1847. Sir, I have the honour to enclose for your information, a copy of the instructions which I received from His Excellency the Lieut. Governor, in reference to the contemplated occupation and purchase of lands in the New Plymouth District. I have the honour Sir, etc., etc., etc., (Signed) Donald McLean. Inspector of Police. To:- Capt. H.King R.N. Police Magistrate etc., etc., etc., New Plymouth. Taranaki. New Plymouth. 8th. March 1847. Sir, I have the honour to inform you that I intend proceeding this afternoon to Tataraimaka, to negotiate with the natives for the purchase of a Block of land in that district; and have engaged Mr. Carrington, at 10/6 per diem, to survey the outside boundaries, and estimate the extent of the land offered for sale, before determining the price to be paid to the natives for the same. In order to expediate the survey, I shall endeavour to secure the services of the natives owning the land in the neighbourhood, with one or more of the Police, in cutting the lines, and shall offer them a sum, not exceeding 1/6 per diem, whilst employed on that service.
