9 July 1851 Friend, McLean, I have great affection for you, so please have affection for me also. I have been injured. I fell from the cart and ruined my hat on a rock. I am here without clothing, with only my skin and the coat you and the Governor gave me at Taranaki. So this is to ask you for a coat, and a red blanket, two, to keep me warm at Murihiku. I am thinking of you. That's all of this matter.
