Hon. Mr. McLean. Mr. Stafford last night intimated that he had been written to by an officer of the Govt. (I inferred Heale) on Major Heaphy's matter. If Heale has done so, he ought to be reprimanded for it, as a most gross impropriety on the part of a Govt. Official. The question can be sifted when the promised enquiry takes place. If Heale fails to prove his charges against Heaphy he will have compromised himself. In one Govt. officer to make charges against another is a very serious affair and if he fail to prove them cannot be passed over. Wm. Fox 31. 8. 70
