Waiapu Pah 20th July 1865 Sir, I have the honor to inform you, that it will be very unsafe to land any stores or ammunition at "Awanui" as the road along which they would have to be brought, for us to get them, is a very dangerous one completely covered by the sea cliff the whole way, and would take a thousand men or more to defend. I have therefore to recommend, that everything be landed here, opposite the Pah, when the surf abates. I beg to state that we are most urgently in want of rifle ammunition, for the reasons I have given in the private letter forwarded herewith - I have the honor to be, Sir, Your most obt.servt. James Fraser Capn. Comd. Col. Forces "Waiapu" To His Honor The Superintendent Prov. Hawke's Bay
