We are all quiet here. Natives anxiously waiting decision about their land, so that they may know where to plant, and what to do. Is there any reason why the Friendlies should not resume their old cultivations? under the express condition that they are to use them on suffrance only, till such time as the Confiscated Lands are selected? I have been applied to, and of course have to let them know. I could give no advice on the matter. Do you think it advisable to entirely abandon the post above Dunlop's? Might it not encourage a raid by way of Te Reinga? Our petition has been signed by all the settlers, save four; to wit, - William J. Greer William Brown William Horsfall William Witherwoon(?) Wyllie is now going round with the duplicate and triplicate copies. Native Petition not yet returned from the Coast. A Mr. Rice now here, is doing all he can to induce people to hold back; talks very large about , and so forth. He will not make many proselytes; though he talks about having instructions from the General Government, (Auckland Province), and £5,000 to lay out in purchase of land, etc., Morgan and party leave for East Cape some time this week.
