Wellington 10th Jany /61 Dear Sir, I should very much like to hear something from you, in reply to my letter written before I left Ak. four mths ago. That is, as to my removal and settlement in Wellington. Mrs. T. has been confined since then, and will therefore be more locomotive than before. But I much fear I shall not be able to let the house at present - I am sorry to hear from Mr. Seake. that he is to remove from this Dist. for I look on his enemies as being chiefly actuated by personal spite, because he wld. not join them in Politics. And for the same reason they will hate me very soon, for I am quite resolved to have nothg. whatever to do with any ''Party'' in Welln. Their reply is, ''he that is not for us, is against us'' - and so proceed to victimize the object. I have been lookg. at his cottage at the Hutt wh. is close to a good lady's sch. and wld. be nearer to natives than Welln. town, wh. moreover, is a rather disagreeable place, unless a man cld. take a 120£ house, and keep plenty of servants etc. Please tell me what effect a change of Ministry, or the new order of things (Nat. Councl.) wld. have on a position like mine - Because, it wld. be ruinous to me and more to be brought down here, where I have no connexion nor friends, nor home, and then, by a sudden shift of political wind, to be blown adrift - If F. was in power, I think he wld. endure none who doubt his infallibility - And indeed any Minister might have friends for whom such places wld. be desireable. Otherwise, if all can be settled nicely and surely, I think I shd. prefer removg. my family hither during the autumn, to driving it into Winter. I forget now, the exact contents of my letter - but perhaps you have time to refer to it, and give me your thoughts and advice on the subject. I am obliged to you for havg. visited my widowed wife and orphan children. I don't think Mrs. T. much likes such long separations though quite willg. to endure them, if necessary - Yours truly H.
