Letter from Sir George Grey to Donald McLean Esq., dated 4th. June 1852. Mr, McLean, Te Rangihaeata having written to me, in-forming me that he is opening up a road from --(?) to the Manawatu, which will hereafter be of considerable further advantage; and having applied to me for some assistance from the Government to aid him in paying the men employed upon this road, you are authorised to procure the following articles, and to transmit them to Rangihaeata; as I am anxious in every possible manner to assist a Chief formerly so troublersome, in so laudable an effort as that of opening up an hitherto inaccessible country. Articles to be sent to Rangihaeata:- 4 dozen good blue shirts, 2 dozen pairs of white moleskin trousers. 1 cwt. of tobacco. 1 bag of sugar. 2 good coats. 2 good pairs of trousers. (Signed) G. Grey. June 4th. 1852.
