(undated.) I herewith transmit a return, shewing the purchases concluded with the Wairarapa natives during my late visit to that district, together with cases of dispute referred to me, while there. Those purchases comprise altogether about 10,000 acres; and from being adjacent to lands already alienated to the Crown, and in some cases, intersecting property in the possession of Europeans, I considered it advisable to effect these purchases. A very small outlay will be sufficient to define these boundaries of the several blocks preparatory to their being proclaimed as open for sale. Numerous Meetings were held with the Wairarapa natives, at which attempts were made by several of them to advance fresh claims to lands previously ceded by them. After a careful enquiry into all the pretended claims raised by the natives, I was glad to find that their own sense of justice
