Auckland, September 5, 1870 My dear McLean, I write you a line to say that there is nothing new. Bush has sent some gossip from Ohinemuri which you will see. Heale has just returned overland from Napier after a hard journey. He reports the Telegraph line is progressing rapidly towards Maketu and Tauranga, also that there was a probability that Kooti had gone to Tokagnamutu, two of his women and a man were captured near Kaiteriria who were or said they were on their way to meet him at Tokagnamutu. This no doubt, will. have been reported to you via Taupo. Clarke has gone to Tauranga. If Cooper's telegram to Fairchild had been less peremptory I should have kept the Luna for three or four days to finish the Manukau survey. It is very important that it should be completed as the condition of the South Channel has greatly changed and it is now dangerous to venture upon the old sailing directions. Wood has been working very hard but the weather has been horrible. I am yours, very truly, Daniel Pollen
