P.S. Just received letter from Ihaia - had not in time to take a copy of it. H.H. New Plymouth April 13, 1857. Dear Sir, When Katatore, W. Kingi and Katatore visited the Kawau pa last month, they received a considerable supply of provisions through Mr. Parris, for which the Provincial Govt. is responsible. A day or two after Ihaia came into Town with about 40 of his supporters and called upon some of the leading people, a little act of courtesy that the previous visitors either did not understand or were too proud to regard. Observing no prospect of a like reception for our real friends I took upon myself the responsibility of ordering some refreshment for them and I am glad to say that the Superintendent and Rest. Magistrate entirely approved of it. I believe I mentioned in a previous letter the supply of a bag of flour and a little sugar to Karipa, who was then expecting some visitors at the Ninia in consequence of Arama Karaka's death, which, with the saddle, will not I hope be thrown away. I handed your letter about the Ikamoana question to Mr. Whiteley for perusal. After careful consideration he proposed seeing Ihaia and Katatore first, and managed so well that although Ihaia was disheartened yet nothing want wrong. As for Katatore he treated everything with the utmost coolness, at the same time giving Mr. Whiteley to understand that he cared but little for the land after all. By the by, I have received Katatore's tomahawk which he surrendered when peace was made and as Colonel Wynyard expressed a desire to have it when last here I intend sending it up to you by next oppty. for presentation to him. I have not received the parcel containing a letter Book 2 mentioned in your letter of the 27th. ulto. Messes. Connell and Ridings must have forgotten to forward it. Nikorima's people are at me for payment for land at Arapawa sold, they say, since their return to Turangi. Hoping you are well, Believe me, faithfully yours, H. Halse. To:- McLean Esq.
