During the course of the Conference I was particularly anxious that William Thompson should agree to a reference, in which both sides should be fairly represented, to the Secretary of state, or to the Governor at Auckland, and promised that I would accompany him and any other chief who might wish to go. I told him that the Governor had shewn his confidence in him by sending me to see him, and that if he was willing to reciprocate that confidence, I would be answerable for hie safe conduct.
