Letter from John Rogan, to Donald McLean Esq. dated 27th. January 1855. New Plymouth 27th. January 1855. My dear Sir, I mentioned last week that an arrangement had been made with the Hua natives to commence the Survey there. Accordingly I proceeded to work in the beginning of the week, and when I reached as far as the Waiwakaiho, several natives politely detained me there; stating that the Hua people had left for Raniera's pa, in consequence of a vague report that Ngatiruanui was on the way. I was therefore compelled to return to town. On Thursday morning, the 26th. a party, headed by Raniera, marched to Katatori's pa; fired off their guns; retreated, and lay in ambush. When Katatori and his men came forth, and passed seaward of Raniera and party, who lay silent in the fern, --- when at the distance of about 20 yards, Raniera rose, and fired, which wounded some of Katatori's men. They continued fighting for several hours, and nearly took the Kaipokopuko, (at least, so they say), when Katatori by good Generalship, managed to regain his fortification. The result of that day is, --- --- Raniera, --- in the thigh,(not seriously) and gazed in the shoulder. Mohi, --- in the foot, slightly. Retia, --- slightly. , --- , 6 men; two of whom are said to be wounded seriously. I saw Raniera yesterday, who says peace will be made only when Katatori, Kawaka, and Te Hapiana fall; and these intend fighting again on Monday next. Under the circumstances it is impossible for me to proceed with the survey of the Native selections. I shall, however, remain here, and await instructions from you as to my future movements. I remain, my dear Sir, yours very truly (Signed) J. Rogan. To:- Donald McLean Esq.
