New Plymouth August 31/57 My dear Sir, The pleasing excitement amongst the Kaipakopaka natives, on the subject of bringing the present offer to a conclusion, in order that an additional block may be sold, contrasts strangely with their opinions and acts in 54. It is however very satisfactory to know that the League no longer exists in this District, and to feel that it is likely to die out where it originated, and that land can now be purchased from the Natives without fear of causing trouble amongst them. So anxious are the natives to sell, that something must be done and quickly done to meet their wishes, otherwise counter-action may take place and render it necessary to go over the ground again. You will be pleased to hear that Parris evinces the greatest zeal and diligence in bringing natives together thereby satisfying as far as it is possible the pride of all parties aing to be considered A. 1. in selling land to the Government. A feeling of pakeke is evinced by Karipa, Haeana, Tiki ki and Tamati in respect to Katatore's offer but as it is merely occasioned by a little petty jealousy, no weight need be attached to it. Ihaia seems disposed to be content with the shew of fight made by some of his people, a fortnight since, hoping in the meantime that his offer of the Ikamoana will be accepted simultaneously with Katatore's offer of Wakangerengere. Hone Ropiha is exceedingly anxious to know the result of Katatore's offer, which he regards as a final settlement of the land question here. He wished me to tell you that it would not be advisable to reduce the amount named by Katatore, I must however confess that £2000 appears to me to be ample --- the more the better. I had the pleasure of receiving a letter from the Colonial Treasurer last week informing me that the Governor had been pleased to raise my salary to £250 per annum. Faithfully yours, H. Halse.
