Wairoa Ap. 19/66 My dear Sir, I have forwarded the enclosed document for you. If you could do any thing for Carter in the matter I should be very thankful, he is a very good man and does his duty well very quiet sober and trustworthy. I have written to Richardson to see you about my section or raher the section on which my house stands, and as he will explain the matter to you I will say nothing more about it. I want to know what I shall do with one of the Hau Hau prisoners Wi Paitarewa, he is the man who shot poor Hussey, but besides that he has been guilty of concealing intelligence which he ought to have communicated and altogether he is a bad character, I have declined administering the oath till I heard from you, Kopu agrees with me in that, he also thinks he ought to be sent to the Chatham Islands. Paora te Apatu seems from some reasons which I cant understand to have rather taken him by the hand. I do not quite like it, and to say the truth I dont quite believe in Paora, I dont mean to say that there is anything really against him but I think he leans towards the Hau Hau prisoners too much to be quite wholesome whether from cowardice or love to them I cant say, but I think the former principally. Bye the bye a rifle that was taken from Wi Paitarewa was handed over to me and Kopu asked for it I did not think I was wrong in letting him have it, but if there is any objection made I can get it from him. I caught three Natives on this side of the river drunk the other day and fined them 10/- each and made them pay it before they left the Court very much to old Kopus delight. He says he hopes I will keep it up, which I mean to do. The fine old fellow sticks to me like anything, I dont know what I should do without him. I expeet the Wakari Moana expedition will start in a few days, they are waiting till the crops are housed which will be very shortly. I am My dear Sir faithfully yours S. Deighton.
