To:- Donald McLean Wellington August 29th. 1868 In reply your telegram yesterday. Do not advise moving Constabulary runanga pending receipt enemy's movements. 25 men insufficient for that post. Enough to provoke hostility impotent to do any good when required. Is it advisable to provoke Urewera by going behind them when you are trying to hold them. Further from Deighton reports Wairoa natives trustworthy but timorous. Says Ihaka Whanga disgusted at late occurrences but thoroughly staunch. Has promised prompt support if wanted. Shall not hear result scouting party Monday at earliest. (Signed) Ormond.
