Private New Plymouth, Feb. 12, 1857. My dear Sir, The recent peace making at the Kaipakopako has not been disturbed by the opposition offered to it by Nikorima and Ihaia, the latter I believe to be in favor of it, but so wedded to the former, through the alliance as to be unable to act otherwise at least for the present. Hone Wetere has taken objection to the cutting down of the Ninia flag staff. He says that Katatore must abandon the aipakopako, now that the flag staff has been cut down, or he will surely die. Therefore if the Ninia staff should be cut down that pa must likewise be vacated. You know the importance attached by the natives to anything Hone Wetere says, however when Katatore and W. Kingi visit that pa together, I think it will be difficult to save the staff from falling. The Kaipakopako natives visit the Ninia continually and are expected in Town this week. Aperahama, of Waitara, came into Town yesterday for the first time since poor Raniera fell. A party of Ngatiruanui natives who came up on the 4th. instant with Waka, of the Kawau, visited the Raeiomiti and Hua pas, and returned southward on the 9th. The Kaipakopako natives arrived at the Hane taone this morning and will remain there for the day. I almost forgot to tell you that Katatore's flag staff is now at Warepu and his red or fighting flag in my house. The former he gave to Parris, the latter to me. faithfully yours, H. Halse. To:- McLean Esq. Master George St. George was drowned on Monday last whilst bathing in the sea. This sad misfortune has greatly affected his father and mother. The funeral will take place tomorrow. Colonel Wynyard sent for me this morng. which is the cause of my great haste. H.H.
