Private Wellington June 27 1863 My dear Maclean, I have given our news in brief to Whitmore - 'tis of a more satisfactory character. We may get into trouble for publishing Karaitiana's letter - I only meant you to take a copy for your information - but never mind: you thought twd. do good I suppose - Henry Puni has written down to his folk here the true version of the affair of the 4th and it has had a soothing effect on the "native mind" (a bit of old Nat. office cant). Wardell from Wairarapa reports all quiet there save troubles from those vexed land questions which you have bequeathed to us - confound you therefor - How can one get a few spare copies of your "Waka Maori"? I cant afford it myself out of my present salary but would take six and make Govt. pay unless you nobly give them. I will not give anyone any information about that Waitara, my friend. "An official account is 'in preparation'" to which I look forward myself. In preference to looking backward to all the Mems. on the subject copies of which I have before me. Do please send on that Puni Taho £200 affair. Yours truly W. Mantell
