June 29th. 1866. My dear Sir, With reference to the Native Policemen, - I was afraid to keep them on, after receiving the documents which I have forwarded; but what I am to do without a Maori to do the Maori part of the business, I do not know. I was not aware till I received your last letter respecting the mouth of the river, that Kopu, too, was concerned in the matter, further than rendering assistance in the way of labour. You told me, - if you remember, - to give Toha what assistance he required, as he had charge of the whole affair, and I accordingly did so. I am sorry to say that Toha and Kopu do not appear upon particularly good terms just now, and I think the latter did not fully concur with the former as to the time of commencing operations; and, in consequence, has not, I , given him his cordial support on the occasion. I Think it is almost a pity that Toha has had the control, for that reason; as he is certainly not liked by the Maoris generally. Hamana has behaved very badly, - telling Toha that if the Government gave 6/- a day, and a cask of rum, he would go to work, but not otherwise. I am very sorry to see such an amount of silly jealousy among the different tribes here; but it has always been the same, as you are aware. As soon as the river is opened, I will send you down the Vouchers for the amount due for labour; and I will try and get it done as cheaply as possible. Toha is very sanguine of success, and I think he is a very good Judge of the matter. Trusting you will approve of the steps I have taken. I am my dear Sir, truly yours (Signed) S. Deighton.
