Hokianga. September 4th. 1871. My dear Sir, I write merely to inform you that a bulky and suspicious looking letter directed to Tawhiao the Great, of Waikato, and his Ministers, has been posted here. It is from the principal Northern Chiefs Nagpuhi and Rarawa, requiring that the murderer of Todd be given up to the Law. I hope that the people at the Post Office won't fancy it is a Torpedo to blow up the State. I have thought it well to inform you of the affair, and would be obliged if you would let Mr. McLean, who wishes the matter expedited as quickly as may be, know that the letter has been posted; as I am so pushed for time that I find it impossible to write to him at length at the present moment. I am, my Dear Sir, Yours very truly, (Signed) F.E. Maning. To:- D. Pollen Esqre. Auckland.
