Monday 2 Nov. /57 My dear Sir, Nothing has been done with Katatore's offer during last week on account of Arapata's opposition to the line crossing Waiongana, and not having heard from Ngatiruanui until last Wedy. Mr.Parris and I, accompanied by Mahau and Ihaia, went to Arapata last Tuesday, but failed to turn him. He said gold was of no value to him and if placed in his hand, would be returned. His tamariki's however attach value to money and it is anticipated they will disregard the old mans scruples. With regard to Ngatiruanui, the feeling of many of our natives inclines to fear, seeing that the Wakangerengere may form a part of the country belonging to the former. The letter received by Mr.Parris admits of two interpretations and an answer has been sent to elicit the meaning intended to be conveyed in reference to the Wakangerengere and until this is received nothing further will be done. In last Thursday's and Saturday's papers notice is taken of a charge of ill usage against Mokau natives towards the shipwrecked sailors of the schooner Harry Morrison, the master, at the suggestion of the Superintendent, gave his deposition to that effect before the Resident Magistrate, but had to leave suddenly in a little vessel, to save his passage it is supposed, without signing the document. The complaint is, of extortionate demands made for potatoes as food, and the use of a hutto sleep in. I write to Mr. Schnackenberg by this mail for information, and should the complaint be well founded, I purpose writing to the natives without delay. I have not received any news from Waka, of Ngatimaniapoto, in reference to Pene and Hetiriki, they are undergoing their sentences cheerfully and in good health. Faithfully yours, H. Halse To:- McLean Esq.
