14th. May 1866. D. McLean, Esq. Napier. My dear Maclean, Some time back I wrote to Ormond to say that I hoped to be able to attend the next sitting of the Council and purposed doing so. I fear, however, that I am not able to go thro a month or more of a winter campaign in Napier, and that it should be necessary for me to resign my seat. This, of course, I much regret and an explanation is due to you on several grounds - the position you hold - and the duty it is for all of us to give you our support. Of any personal respect to yourself I need not speak. Nor can I write you at any length upon this subject, as I hope to see you before long, when I can explain matters fully, give you my reasons why I adopt the present course. The Electors of this District would I think return a man who would support your government - either Chapman, or Russell. That is to say, if they go to the Polls. I trust you will excuse the brevity with which I write, and allow me to add that the course I adopt is done under medical advice. I am always faithfully and sincerely yours, E.S. Curling. P.S. Mr. B. aimd at the future representation of Waimarama this I feel pretty certain about - objecting to the votes of the Russell family and others - and his playing up to F, Tiffen to make him more hostile to us, and with himself. - Mr. T. being returning officer, and very wroth at the late exposure of his conduct in regard to sheep affairs - Threats he has used to me which comes badly from a Sheep Inspector. I write this mail to Capt. Russell as Chapman who is now on his road to Napier is unwilling to stand. I hope to see you in a few days and Chapman will doubtless wait upon you. E.S.C.
