January 6 1864. Sir, I have been very anxious about the "Leader" for next issue of te "Naka" since you left not knowing when you would return. I am not sure that I quite understood your instructions with regard to Paora and te Runanga. At all events I believe a hit at the Runangas cannot possibly do any harm under present circumstances more particularly as many natives in the Province and elsewhere have been great sufferers by their proceedings, and I am quite sure a feeling response will be elicited from many, (); anything in opposition may be merely noticed in Notices to Correspondents. Upon the whole I think the effect will be to weaken the power of the Runangas, as . You will see that I have spoken of Matutaera's flag being pulled down at Ngaruawahia and this will be corroborated by the letters (printed in the same issue) from Waikato to the Govt. in which it is clearly stated that the "mana" of the Island must be given to the Queen, and the Queen's flag hoisted, and the King deposed altogether. I am rather glad to see that the natives are beginning to evince a disposition to support the paper. I expect £1 from Petane next mail from Paraone Kuare and Renata Haepai (I think). Others also in other parts have written promising to send their subscriptions at once. Will you be good enough to let me know if the Leader will do - and strike out what you do not like. I must have it if possible on Thursday night so as to let Shand have it in time for setting up. Besides there are other matters to he set up which cannot be done until we know what room the Leader will take up. I have the honor to be Sir Yours most respectfully, James Grindell. D. McLean E/sq.
