Hill St. Feb. 27-72 My dear McLean, Ropata Ngarongomate is here but since the Wairarapa Court I have no reason for detaining him longer on N.L.C. account. He would have gone by the "Phoebe" but wished to see you and to have the question of pay settled - he has been away from home about 7 months and has sat with me at 7 sittings of the Court during that time. He has drawn the usual travelling allowance of 10/s per diem - but this does but cover current expenses and he ought to be compensated for loss of time - I would suggest a present - say £50 - He is a very good assessor and has performed his duties well - I think a present better than making a precedent by giving pay - With sincere congratulations on your successful trip up the W. Coast Believe me Ever faithfully yours Thos. H. Smith Hon. Donald McLean Esq.
