Horowhenua 10 Jany. 1874 To Honorable D.McLean Your Honor I have the Honor of litting you know what happned here since my arivel last night it was late when we left Otaki it was dark by the time we arived at Pukes pah at once begun and told the Nati Tehis of their rong doings Tamihana the leding man answered sharply Eru sayed to him I cannot take you away as you are like myself but I wish you to go back as you know that Puke and Watene is gone to see the Native Minister you have don rong by firing at the Muaupokos he sayed I have come after my brother and I take him away tonight I then spoke to them told them how rong it was of them to fire at the Muaupokos when the Puke and Watene had gone to speakto your Honor I told them that was not theway to get the land back through your foolish work I had one of my children nearly killed the ball struck the ground call to them and sevrel balls struck the flax within twelve yards of my house I cannot blame the Muaupokos I told them its you would be in falt and if you persist in your work to massacre me and young Roeras boy will go before you to the musle of the Muoupokos guns we will be the first to die Tamihana sayed I have no answer to make to you for all you have sayed is true and I am done I go home the first thing in the morning wich he has don and I have ben to the Muaupokos this morning they were all on the watch on the hills they all followed me to the pa I explained all to them that it was a few drunken fellows of the Nati tehis I find that they were all drunk and qietned the Muaupokos down as it was not their falt and there was no blame atached to them so alls quiet now the Nati huias are ext about it but all they could do would not stop the fellows from going I told the Muaupokos I was going to stop at home til all was settled they sayed that was right I also told them what I sayed to your Honor that when your Honor had spoken to Puke and Watene you were going to see Major Kemp you should not come here to see them and not for them to be pouri as you knew they should satisfied with what ever the Major don they sayed that was all right and were quite satisfied I would suggest that your Honor write a note to them befor you leave it would please them much I know. Your Honor will excuse this long letter but I thought it as well to let your Honor know what was don as I had to send a boy for my horse I lent to Eru to take Ihaka with him last night.
