Oct. 19, 1870 Dear Maclean, I received an official about John White. As soon as he returned from the Chathams I wrote to you a private letter stating that I had no further employment for him. I understand you wanted me to take him until you found employment elsewhere for him, and I have been keeping him on all the time hoping to hear from you. I have written 3 notes reminding you of him, but they must have miscarried for your official looks as if the subject had only just been brought to your recollection. However I suppose you must be hard about the expence. It would be a great pity if you let White leave the service altogether Interpreters are getting scarce. Yours truly, F. D. Fenton
