Wairoa, June 1st, 1865. Dear Sir, I arrived again at the Wairoa by way of the Mahia - I reached the Mahia on May 25th on the following day I went to Wangaweh to visit the Natives of that part and to endeavour to ascertain their intentions with respect to the sale of Wangawehi, I found that it was of no use trying at present but that the Ngapuhi were willing to sell a small piece - which I promised to look at as soon as I could get back from the Wairoa - I distributed ten of the suits intended for the police at Tuiroa's place the other ten I sent to the Mahia to be distributed I am happy to say that every thing is goingon peaceably at Nukutau I stopped one night at Nuhaka where a very satisfactory meeting took place. The people there are very anxious to do something to show that they are sincere they are first a going to build a pa, they then want work as police, or on the roads or anything else that you wish to employ them at - They also are very anxious that Nuhaka should be settled at once with plenty of Europeans - Watene, (page torn) and the rest of the Waikatos and West Coast natives are going away at once - I should like to have the three flags up as soon as possible - The natives are anxious for me to conclude the Turiroa sale which I will do as soon as I have given Kohea his muskets and settled a few other little matters at this part of the river - I should not be surprised if the other side of the river were offered very soon. I met Mr. R. Deighton at the Mahia he accompanied me to the Wairoa - Mr. S. Deighton I believe is going to Napier on Saturday - Everything is going on quietly and well here at present I will write again by the first opportunity the mail is going - I remain, Dear Sir, Your obt. S. Locke. To His Honour D. McLean, Esq., Napier.
