Wellington, 13 June 63. 3 P.M. My dear MacLean, The ovd. mail today brought White's news to 11th. He says "It is said that only three have escaped of Hori Patene's hapu of Pipiriki, that chief having, you will regret to hear, headed the exodus of his people to a better world - I enclose my copy of the Maori account of killed in the Whanganui contingent - I thought you wd. like to take a copy for reference and return, mine by first mail. The Katiwi settlers remain on their farms. Buller writes mysteriously of dangerous symptoms but does not say what they are: afraid perhaps of alarming me.
