Auckland Jan 24, 63 My dear Sir, By way of reminding you of Graham's buildings, I send you a line to say that all goes tolerably smooth here at present. The great investigation of title between Ti and the Mangakahia people has ended as far as taking down evidence on both sides is concerned - Johnson and several others are engaged on the translations which when completed the arbitrators work begin, in the mean time £15 or £20 a day will not cover the expense but what of that. Why the point opposite limestone I stand which is now under offer to the Government for the first time will return a profit to the country very soon which will meet all expenses. It is however by no means clear to the minds of some that the matter will be amicably settled after all. However we must not anticipate - The Governor as you know is back from Waikato and has been unwell ever since. I think you will agree with me that if the truth were known Wi Tamehana and others said something so very indigestable to him that he has not been able to overcome it yet - The Avon was said to go to Waikato but she has merely gone to Drury on a trial trip. Armitage is said to be trying hard to be reappointed and the Bishop, Gorst, and others are opposed. I hear there are a number of Ecclesiastical people to be appointed Commissioner's for Waikato, Purchas at the head - This will suit him better than his present office - Of course you have heard of the great fire it has made a fearful hole in the Town. I am happy to inform you that our pay sheet is filled in with the increase added although Mount Albert absorbs it all and more - I thought I secured a pheasant for you the other day but S. G. Grey gave a sovereign and that was too much - I called two or three times on Miss McDougall who was out and secured a passage for her in the Zillah but J.A. Smith undertook to see her on board of another vessel and of course she is all safe with you long ago - I am getting along very well at Kaipara having started an extensive survey there. I am now engaged on a land question relating to the Big Bairn and must say adieu for the present. Your's, J. Rogan
