Wellington 3rd. April 1873. My dear Mr. McLean, I want you to look over a sample of the work which I mean to put forth. I wish to make it a light, readable book, which may interest people; and I also mean to not go in for any Political ideas -- whatever I may do if ever I get the chance. The whole work will be in the same style. I shall feel deeply grateful to you if you will kindly read this over, and let me have it, with your remarks, before any departure of yours takes place from Wellington. Believe me Yours truly, (Signed) J.H.H. St. John P.S. What shall the name be? I propose, of course -- "Old and New Waikato" and Trips through the North Island of New Zealand. Edited by J.H.H. St. John.
