Jan. 3 1872 Auckland Dear McLean, I forgot to mention that before I left Napier the Herald people applied to me for money in connection with the libel case - What they wanted was money to pay for legal expenses incurred. I told them both you and I were prepared to assist but that we could not be responsible for the cost of a case which might cost a large sum of money. I wd. agree to give them £50 now for my share - please write saying what you will be inclined to do and whether I shall pay it for you. I told Carlile he must get his other friends to assist - write abt. this by first chance as I fancy they are pressed for the money - Just before I left Napier I paid in £90 to your credit at the Union Bank on account of Rent the Balance (for the year ended some time in Oct) £10 I have paid for you in different ways and will make up an account some time of items. I must close. In great haste Yours always J.D. Ormond
