Copy. Nelson 12th. August 1845. Mr. C.H. Schanckenberg. Dear Sir, Enclosed you have duplicate of a letter I wrote you by the Lugger the last time she left this; but which will never likely reach you, as I have every reason to fear the crew have run with her, never intending to return; and except their deliberately planned villany is over-ruled by a higher power, I do not expect ever to see the vessel again. They intend going to some of the little islands in the South Seas. This will be a great loss to me, as, beside my interest in the vessel, I had about £70 worth of merchandise, mostly such as you and the other Europeans stand in need of, trusting to have had the most of my return cargo from the natives as payment of the vessel. Mr. Heine, the German Missionary here, also had aboard £12 worth of stores purchased from me, and other property consigned to Messrs. Reimenschneider and Frost. I have written to the Governor, giving him a description of the vessel and crew; and requesting him to instruct any of Her Majesty's vessels falling in with them, to detain her. And by the Star of China, which is at present in Port, bound to Tahiti direct, I will write to the Admiral on the Station, making the same request. I should like to know what the natives say about the matter, and if there would, on that account, be any danger to any other vessel calling in at your place. The "Lively" (?) will return straight from Kawhia, and will be immediately despatched to Manakau, so that a letter sent to me via Auckland, would soon come to hand, if you have no opportunity of sending to Kawhia before the "Lively" comes. I remain, dear Sir, Yours respectfully (Signed) A. Perry. To:- Mr. C.H. Snackenberg.
