Letter from G. Eyre, to Donald McLean dated 22nd. May 1848. Government House, Wellington, 22nd. May 1848. My dear Sir, I have barely time to write a line in acknowledgement of your several communications, which have duly reached me; and to express my gratification at the apparent success which seems likely to attend your exertions in attempting to adjust satisfactorily and finally the Whanganui Land Question. I trust most sincerely you will be able to conclude before moving on to Taranaki. I could have wished that the "Mawar" (?) had also been present, and a party to the arrangement; but if his claims are considered with the rest, and the share to which he might be entitled (if any) deposited either with Major Wyatt, or Mr. Taylor, or some other near relations. I hope no further difficulties will ensue from his absence. I have written by this post to W. King, sending him a new Union Jack, on a white ground; together with a letter of introduction to Major Wyatt, and a permit to take on his powder and arms; so that I trust he will at last feel and guaranteed from molestation, as far as the Government are concerned. With respect to the Hospital, I quite agree with you that it would never do, on Mr. Taylor's side of the river; and have therefore that it is to be placed where the Hospital Reserve is marked on the Company's map, near the riverside, (in the town). I will write again when an opportunity occurs; but must beg you in the meantime to let me hear frequently and fully on the subject of your proceedings. Yours faithfully (Signed) G. Eyre. To:- Donald McLean Esq.
