May 27, 73 My Dear Sir I take the liberty to send you some extracts which I have cut out of a private letter which I have just received from the North thinking they might be interesting, as indicating at this time the feeling of the Northern Natives. I am My dear Sir Yours very truly F.E. Maning Honble D. Pollen Auckland P. S. Young Te Tui and other Rarawa's just called on me for news they are prepared to go in for fighting or anything else the Government may wish but you would have to lead them (this is their own words), what a hot headed lot they are, I continually try to damp their ardour a little but its no go. ...There is an almost irrepressible feeling amongst them on the subject, they would jump at the chance of going to fight Waikato, all they would want would be the land of Waikato for their services, and as Rawiri said to me this morning a few women to work for them in their "Kumera plantations". One man Patara Ngamanu said "if Ngapuhi goes to Waikato all the people of that side will be gone in three days for Ngapuhi could not be troubled with prisoners - this talk is all spontaneous.
