1860 Wednesday 10 a.m. My dear McLean, Tamati is gone in by this morning's van I send in the evidence, yours and mine, in which I have made some corrections - pleaselook at them and forward to the clerk of the Committee I think it will be necessary to prepare something in the shape of a memo which will give the views of the native office in a clearer shape than they will appear in the evidence - this I will prepare today - You will remember that you have promised to give your opinion in writing on Fenton's system as delineated in his memorandum also to state your views as to the manner in which the Native Movement for Self government should be directed by the Govt. vide Qy. Nos. 57 and 58 put to you by the Committee - I have corrected the statement about the quantity of grass seed sent - which was 50 not 50 lbs I suppose this is allowable - Please send me by bearer any papers etc. or suggestions I shall have a copy of my second days evidence tomorrow - Yours sincerely, Thos. H. Smith.
