Wairoa November 22nd. 1868 Dear Sir, As I believe there is an Expedition about to start from here to cut off the retreat of the rebels from Turanga, I beg to offer my services to accompany the same. I might mention that it is the wish of the Wairoa natives that I should accompany them on all such expeditions. You may rely on me doing all in my power to further your wishes with regard to the said expedition. I may at the same time mention that the natives do not wish the Major to go with them I was very sorry to hear that Mr. Deighton had lost his appointment. I hope the Government will do something for him. The natives are not pleased about his leaving, as he is like by them. Hoping that you will send me instructions to go - believe me to remain Yours truly (Signed) George Preece. To:- D. McLean Esq. Napier
