My dear McLean, I think we had better confer about Nelson. What I fear is if we offer Richmond a seat in Upper House is that his supporters may help Elliott. A great many votes are given on personal not political grounds. It would be better for Kelling to resign. If there were only an excuse for going to Nelson it would be well, but without such excuse it would create the reverse of the effect desired. I think it is well worth telegraphing privately to McKay. He will like to be asked - something like this would do. Two Government candidates in Nelson likely to give Elliott chance of getting in can nothing be done to induce Kelling to resign. I suppose if marked confidential it would be safe to send it. I will send telegram to Turtin (?) at Auckland. Yours (H.) Russell.
