Thranga 24th. May 1865. My dear Sir, I wrote you yesterday since when I hear Lazarous kukupo has said "if the Loyal Natives do not take down the flag staff, he will set upon them with the Hau hau party". Such proceedings as those of that old scoundrel should at once be checked. I firmly believe his intention is to get this district in a blaize if possible your presence would I thinkdo much in getting the Hapus who are now wavering to declair for the Queen. I was told by one of our Chiefs so long ago as the Kohirarama conference that in the event of trouble in Turanga, Lazarous would be the instigator. This appears to be true surely we cannot allow friendly Natives to be threatened with extermination by the Pai Marere fanatics without rendering them assistance. I hope the loyal party will remain firm. It is time a decided course was pursued here temporising with these fellows will not do. The Policy so long pursued here (for the last twenty five years) of excluding settlers from Turanga, is now having its fruit - the district is more unsettled and with a less number of adult Europeans there in 1840.
