Napier Oct. 30 1867 Sir, I have the honor to call your attention to the following facts: That during the time in which you were holding negociations with the Hauhau natives of Turanga, the entire property upon the school premises remained untouched. A short time before a few of the posts of my garden fence had been taken up and carried to the Pa, but upon the remonstrance of Wiremu Haronga they were at once carried back. That it was not until the movement of the force was ordered from Turanganui, after the fruitless negociations had been broken off, that the buildings at Waerengaahika were plundered and burnt, the smoke of which was seen by the Defence Force on their way to Huiatoa I have the honor to be Sir Your obedt. servant William Waiapu To:- His Honor The Superintendent of NapierNapier [note]Capt. Biggs will have the goodness to state what he knows of this subject. Donald McLean 6 November 1867 [note]Napier 3 November 1867 The Bishops houses were destroyed before the Colonial Forces left Turanganui I remember having my attention called to the smoke rising at the back of Makauri by the Venble. Archdeacon Williams.Reginald Newton Biggs.
