Turanga 25 November 1865. My dear Sir, I am truly sorry to feel it my duty to forward the accompanying letter complaining of the conduct of the Native contingent under Morgan truly it could not have been worse. We send a representation of their doings to Major Frasier yesterday he wrote them at once but it appears not to have had the slightest effect. We had hoped to have been able to return to our homes during the course of the next week as the Hau hau rising here may be considered at an end. In all probability in a day or two we shall have no homes to go to. The Pai Marire have not done us one tenth part of the damage inflicted by Morgan and his men. Stock of all description, fences, crops, gardens, orchards are virtually destroyed, furniture broken up, boarding torn down to make fires in fact all kinds of property destroyed in the spirit of pure wantoness. Some of our settlers may now be said to have lost their all. I had hoped not to have been obliged to send a claim for compensation nor should I have been compelled to do so the Natives of all denominations not even with the exception of taking a few houses and other stock respected my property until yesterday and my homestead was then intact it is now a ruin. I assure you our settlers and friendly Natives will long have cause to recollect with far other than amicable feelings the visit of the Native contingent. It would be as well could you pay us a visit if only a flying one. Very faithfully, J.W. Harris. Donald McLean Esquire Napier P.S. On remonstration with Morgan about his conduct, he said with all these things down Government will pay you it is all right - I send a list of killled and wounded of the Hau hau party. About 40 Hau hau including and are prepared to give themselves up on your arrival.
