Friday afternoon 4 Jan./61 My dear sir, I write a line to tell you that two natives have just arrived on horseback from Pukaki. They say the Victoria is in, and that the natives have been defeated by the troops with heavy loss - 150 killed including many women who were in the pa during the attack - other natives arrived in a canoe from Mangere with same report, which I observe the natives here are disinclined to believe although most of them look very blue over it. I believe there is some truth in the report, but until the mail makes its appearance tomorrow evening, I shall not rest - although not forming part of the expedition, I am deeply interested in its success. As Katipas potatoes will be fit to gather in less than a fortnight, I propose reducing the supplies to his people say by one half, and gradually discontinue them altogether. Katipa is on the Doctors list, and requires judicious treatment to recover his prostration of strength. I fancy his days are numbered. Faithfully yours, H. Halse
