Dear Captain Johnston, I have to apologise for delay in replying to your letter of the 21st. March enclosing the preface to the Maori story which I sent to Maning for perusal and I think I am justified in showing you his note to me on the subject. I am exceedingly glad that you have that you have undertaken to write on this subject and I shall look forward with great interest to the book when it makes its appearance. Maning and I had a long discussion about it. I am unable to say anything about your land grant till I go to Wellington when I will go fully into the question. I remain etc. Donald McLean. Auckland May 2nd. 1871.
