Auckland. March 7th. 1870. My dear McLean, You know how very much hurt and disgusted I am at the abominable untruths spoken and circulated about me, both privately and publicly; and being, as you are aware, unable to contradict them from my position as a Government Officer, and I feel it deeply, though perhaps I am foolish in feeling as I do. The writer of the article in question. is either Mr. Pilliet, or Lt. Col. Fraser . , I feel confident; and you know what I told you about the former the other day. I enclose you a letter I have just received from my Adjutant ----- Canning (?). I have endured much hardship, and put up with much during the last six months,- hunger and want of rest; and would do any service to the country, undergoing the same again most cheerfully; but I cannot allow my character to be besmirched by scoundrels. Trusting you will kindly consider what I have said, and give me your advice, I am Yours faithfully, Thos., Mdonnell.
