Napier. June 20th. (no date) 1870 My dear McLean, I have only time to write very hurriedly; that confounded Taranaki has come before her time; and I have nothing ready for her. The clerks are all busy getting copied the Waikaremoana correspondence; but it will require careful looking over; as in the haste I may have passed something not desirable to publish; and as you know, Haultain's reports are not desirable. Look at the native letters attached to the correspondence, - I mean those from the Urewera. I don't like the tone of them; and do not expect they mean to surrender. The difficulty is keeping our natives up to their work. It has been constant whip and spur to do it; and my fear is that directly they feel the rein slackened, the whole thing will collapse. With plenty of working up, and trading on their jealousies, (in which I find Ropata's name especially useful), the Wairoas could, I think, be got to attack and carry Hereheretau; and I think that ought to be done before the Expedition is allowed to collapse. The capture of the boat and canoes is necessary to complete the Lake successes. That done, the enemy is powerless for the Winter. Please look at my last instructions (this day to Hamlin). You will see I have carried out your wishes, as in your telegram of this morning; except that in case of Kooti being at the Lake, I have authorised Hamlin to attack. If Kooti there, negotiations are useless, and delay is only strength to the enemy. About coming to the Assembly, I cannot be ready until Saturday or Monday next. Can you manage to send ''Luna'' for me about Sunday. There is no steamer from here for Goodness knows when. Haven't time to add more. Yours always, (Signed) J.D. Ormond.
