Sir, I beg to submit the following statement ''of facts'' (relative to recent outrages committed by the HauHaus of this District), for your information. I left my home at Putoko near Pa tu tahu on the morning of 1st Novemr. in consequence of a notice received from the chiefs Poki Poki Te Kepa and Te Otene Te Whare both leaders of the Hau Hau. The terms of the notice were as follows - ''whaka atea atu korua ki wahi ke waiho akonei, you leave this ground & go elsewhere and leave it Vacant for the government & the to use as a flighting ground, hei ruma piri mo te HauHau raua ko te Kawana''. Acting on this warning I conveyed my family with all speed to Turanga Nui. On the forenoon of 2d Novemr. I returned to Putokowith a bullock sledge for the purpose of procuring a few articles of food and clothing. While there, a band of hau Haus numbering about thirty, came to the place, and smashed in the doors of two of my houses. I stood by h looking at them but offered no remonstrance or advice in the matter in fact I deemed that quite useless, under the circumstances. The work of pillage commenced
